NDIS Cleaning Services: How Domestic Assistance Works

Wheelchair user discussing household cleaning preferences with a cleaner at home

Keeping a home clean can be one of the hardest parts of daily life for someone living with disability. NDIS domestic assistance exists to help with exactly that, but the way funding works isn’t always obvious, and it’s easy to feel unsure about where to start.

This guide explains NDIS cleaning services in plain English: what domestic assistance covers, how it’s funded and what to look for in a provider.

What is NDIS domestic assistance?

Domestic assistance is support with everyday household tasks, such as cleaning, that someone would otherwise struggle to do themselves because of their disability. It sits among the supports that help participants live independently at home.

Whether it’s funded depends on your NDIS plan. The NDIS pays for supports that are “reasonable and necessary” and included in your plan, so the first step is to check your plan or ask your support coordinator, plan manager or planner whether household cleaning is included.

What can NDIS cleaning include?

Domestic cleaning support is usually regular, practical help with the basics:

  • Dusting and wiping down surfaces
  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms
  • Kitchen cleaning, including benches and appliances
  • Emptying bins
  • Tidying to keep the home safe and easy to move around

How NDIS funding works for cleaning

How you pay a provider depends on how your plan is managed:

  • NDIA-managed: you can only use registered NDIS providers, and they claim payment directly from the NDIS.
  • Plan-managed: your plan manager pays your provider’s invoices, and you can usually choose registered or unregistered providers.
  • Self-managed: you pay providers and claim the cost back, with the most flexibility in who you use.

Before you book, ask any provider how they invoice and whether they’re registered, so you know it will work with your plan.

What does NDIS cleaning cost?

Housekept’s NDIS domestic assistance is charged at $60.10 per hour. Total labour hours are honoured according to the number of cleaners attending. As with NDIS supports generally, appointments cancelled with less than two full business days’ notice, and no-shows, may be invoiced in full.

Choosing an NDIS cleaning provider

  • Consistency. Will you see the same cleaner each visit? Familiar faces make a big difference.
  • Insurance. Is the provider insured? Are cleaners employees or subcontractors?
  • Communication. Will you know who’s coming and when?
  • Flexibility. Can the service work around your routine and support needs?
  • Clear invoicing. Can they invoice in a way that suits how your plan is managed?

At Housekept, our cleaners are employees, not subcontractors. HouseKept is insured, and we assign a consistent cleaner wherever possible. Find out more about our NDIS and DVA cleaning.

DVA household services

If you’re a veteran approved for DVA household services, Housekept can deliver cleaning under the DVA Household Services Program at $73 per hour. Check your eligibility and approvals with DVA first.
